Four checks at the port
- Confirm today’s operating route and vessel on the operator site.
- Bring any booking or ticket reference; drivers should also bring the vehicle registration document when required.
- Finish check-in at least 30 minutes before departure.
- At Niigata or Ryotsu, allow about 30 to 40 minutes for a counter or ticket-machine purchase. A paid foot-passenger digital ticket can go directly to the gate; vehicles should arrive 60 minutes before departure and finish processing 30 minutes before.

Bringing a pet: choose where you will spend the crossing
On the car ferry, ordinary passenger cabins cannot take pets. Choose a shared pet corner to stay together, or a separate cage area. A jetfoil is a different option for small pets in closed carriers.
Choose your pet accommodation
- Stay beside your pet
Use the car ferry's shared pet corner; no reservation is required. Okesa Maru's corner has no cooling. Tokiwa Maru has indoor cooled/heated areas as well as an outdoor area. Check the vessel if an indoor space matters.
- Use a separate cage
The car ferry's cage area needs no reservation, but is locked during the crossing: you cannot remain there with your pet. Choose this only if separation works for your trip.
- Take the jetfoil
Only small pets in carriers that fully enclose the head and body can board. Keep the carrier at your feet; an open bag is unsuitable.

- Need a private dog room?
The advertised With-Dog room belongs to Kogane Maru on Naoetsu–Ogi, not this route.
- Large pet, no carrier, or an animal other than a dog/cat?
Ask Sado Kisen before choosing a sailing; large pets may be refused.
- Driving aboard?
Plan a pet area, not a stay in the car: the vehicle deck has no heating or cooling.
Where to arrange a pet journey
Sado Kisen allows pets under its conditions, but Direct Ferries currently labels this route as not allowing pets. The cause of that difference is unconfirmed. Arrange a pet journey through Sado Kisen; do not use a normal ticket purchase as proof that your pet is included.
